Multimedia CODECs

Aricent’s Multimedia CODECs (Coders/Decoders) are a key element of Aricent’s Media EXP™ suite, a pre-packaged software framework that enables device manufacturers to accelerate the launch of highly differentiated products for mobile TV, messaging, video conferencing and streaming media solutions.

As a strategic supplier to virtually all of the top-tier mobile handset manufacturers, Aricent’s Media EXP™ suite continues the rich legacy of excellence.

  • 8 of the top 10 handset manufacturers are Aricent customers

  • Our software is shipped in 120+ million handsets annually

  • Over 400+ million devices have been shipped with Aricent software

Aricent’s CODECs are pre-optimized for certain targets (for instance, Intel Atom SSE2 instructions set), enabling HD Video (720p 30fps) with significant savings in CPU processing power and considerably extending battery life for video recording and playback.

Aricent’s CODECs and the multimedia applications are pre-integrated on the Moblin Linux platform, driving considerable cost savings for the device manufacturers in the form of reduced development and integration test cycles. This pre-integration also reduces time-to-market and guarantees certainty of product delivery to market.

The Media EXP™ suite also offers a wide range of multimedia effects as shown in the figure below:

Key Benefits

  • Save CPU processing power: Aricent CODECs are pre-optimized for multiple processors (e.g. ARM, TI, Marvell and Intel) and operating systems (e.g. Symbian, Windows Mobile, BREW, Java and Android), resulting in considerable savings in CPU processing power, which extends battery life for video recording and playback.
  • Reduce development and integration cycles: The CODECs are backed by an extensive range of product lifecycle services that help you shorten application development and integration cycles for a variety of devices (Mobile Handsets, PDAs, MIDs, PMPs and DPFs).
  • Reduce development and integration testing costs: The CODECs are pre-integrated on certain platforms (e.g. Moblin Linux), which significantly reduces development and integration testing time and thereby the cost.
  • Compliant and interoperable: Aricent CODECs are standards compliant, have low memory and power footprint and are tested for interoperability with a variety of devices and applications.
  • Ease of integration: Aricent also offers multimedia system plug-ins e.g. Symbian MMF/MDF, Windows Mobile DShow, Linux GStreamer, Android PacketVideo OpenCORE and OpenMax that enable ease of integration with various operating systems.
  • Supports emerging standards: Aricent continually invests in upgrading its multimedia suite to support emerging standards such as Mobile TV, DVB-H, and Hi-Definition playback.
  • Deliver next generation capabilities: Aricent’s Multimedia CODECs will also power Intel’s Atom based devices, delivering the next generation of entertainment and communication capabilities.
