LTE using Unlicensed Spectrum

With ever expanding data services demand over LTE network and the licensed spectrum being a scarce resource, the wireless industry is moving towards leveraging huge license-exempt spectrum available, which is used primarily by WLAN networks.3GPP Release 13 has specified two characteristics of using the license-exempt spectrum, namely LTE Licensed Assisted Access (LTE-LAA) and LTE Wi-Fi Aggregation (LWA). Leveraging the existing release 10 Carrier Aggregation (CA) capabilities, LTE-LAA solution uses one or more carriers in license-exempt spectrum as secondary cell, which can be shared with Wi-Fi for opportunistic access to increase traffic capacity of an in-building LTE network in a cost effective manner. LWA, on the other hand, enables combining LTE and Wi-Fi technology to provide a unified wireless network to provide seamless services to LTE and Wi-Fi enabled user devices.
