The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has defined the architecture and use cases for NFV. In the Management and Network Orchestration (MANO) architecture, a key component is the VNF Manager (VNFM) which performs the lifecycle management of the VNFs.

Some of the key objectives for implementing the smart networks are:

  • Multi-vendor solutions and Open Source will co-exist. There is a need to have a simplified and unified deployment and management system for the virtual network functions (VNF), where the deployment rules and policies can be easily managed
  • Analytics and co-relating infrastructure and VNF statistics is critical towards creating an optimized, self-managed VNF deployments
  • The management solution should be able to manage hybrid Network Function Virtualization Infrastructure Points of Presence (NFVI-PoP)
  • The solution should have VNF-awareness and this should be programmable and easily extendable

Aricent VNF Manager Framework

Aricent VNF Manager Framework is an enriched VNF Manager module which focuses on providing a solution for these key objectives.

The solution provides the flexibility of leveraging the Virtual Infrastructure Manager (VIM) such as OpenStack and VMware services for deploying carrier-grade NFV solutions through a wide range of interfaces including a programmable interface for end communication with VNFs.
